Today is my birthday! So you know what that means…cake! And for me, coffee and cake, because I can’t have one without the other. Since I wasn’t born too far from this next coffee and cake spot, I deem it the perfect one to highlight on my day of birth.
Last week, I was back home in Columbus, Ohio and was thrilled to check out this new addition to their coffee shop scene: Fox in the Snow Cafe. A friend told me about this place before I arrived, so I had time to scout it out on the interwebs beforehand.
Pour Overs: check.
Hip-industrial yet homey interior design: check.
Delectable looking treats: check.
European appeal: check.
Quality sourced coffee: check.
I was sold before I even set foot in the place.
So on one particularly gray day when I was feeling the effects of the night before, I decided there was no better time to give this place a try. And even though I was camera-less, I couldn’t resist documenting my visit with the help of my iPhone.
Now they don’t exactly sell cake, but their fresh and delicious pastries more than make up for that little technicality. And one of the cool features of Fox in the Snow, is that you can watch your baked goods being made before your eyes. No better quality assurance than that. Plus, it provides some visual entertainment while your taste buds are busy absorbing all of the rich flavors and luscious textures.
The menu appears to be fixed (i’m assuming by its permanent status on the wall), but with enough variety to keep you satisfied for many a visit. Plus, I would be hard pressed to ever proclaim myself sick of anything on that menu. But I do hear through the grapevine, that more savory menu additions are in the works.
More additions are clearly not necessary for me as I could barely choose what to order. My first impulse made me the proud owner of a blueberry scone, but after eyeing my brother and his girlfriend’s gooey sticky bun and cinnamon roll selections, I immediately regretted my order and decided that it would be my snack for later. No offense to the scone (it was perfectly grand), I just wanted something of the more hot and sticky variety. I promptly went back up and ordered one of their seductive cinnamon rolls with only a glimmer of shame.
I mean look at that selection! How could a girl choose? And it’s not just their pastries that will leave you paralyzed by delicious options. The coffee too!
First, I think all the coffee snobs and baristas out there will take a moment with me to admire their beautiful Pour Over line and La Marzocco espresso machine. Beauty.
All of the coffee is sourced from Tandem Coffee Roasters, based out of Portland, Maine. I later learned that the two owners of the shop received their training from the legendary, Blue Bottle Coffee in New York. No wonder this place is top of the line and as hip as a Portlandia episode.
And for the espresso? It definitely passed the test. It was expertly extracted with a rich chocolatey sweet taste, and had a little latte heart to boot. I didn’t try a Pour Over this time (although the glutton in me definitely wanted to get both), but I received assurance from my friend that it was on point as well.
The only downside, depending on how you see it, is their no wifi policy. For people who spend their days working out of coffee shops like me, this can be seen as a negative. But, on the other hand, it ensures plenty of spaces available to sit with friends and family for a peaceful Sunday morning chat.
So if you find yourself in Columbus and in need of a treat, I suggest you give Fox in the Snow a try, and tell me what you think. Because any day is a good day for a birthday treat!
